Book Review: Darth Vader and Son by Jeffrey Brown

Darth Vader and SonFor decades, Star Wars has captured the hearts of many through the epic movies, the gripping comics and many other franchises. In fact, the term “Expanded Universe” has been coined to indicate the official Star Wars materials other than the classic original films.

Darth Vader and Son is the first book in the comic book series created by award-winning cartoonist Jeffrey Brown. Unlike any other Expanded Universe projects, this comic book series has a humorous take on the characters of this beloved world. Here, Jeffrey Brown sets up his own Alternate Universe, also known as Alternative Universe or AU, and explores the idea of villain Darth Vader bringing up his children Luke and Leia on his own. As one can easily imagine, this is not only very creative, but also opens up a huge number of possibilities.

First and foremost, the whole concept of this Alternate Universe is definitely very intriguing on its own. This idea might have occurred to many fans of Star Wars but Jeffrey Brown’s take is absolutely unique in its own way. He develops this idea into a series of scenarios and each scenario in the book is totally different from another one. Jeffrey Brown has not limited himself into normal household situations but in fact covers many, if not all, aspects in the bringing up of children. He manages to give raising kids a fun twist, which should be rather challenging considering that he has to incorporate Star Wars jokes and themes every now and then.

The tones undertaken by the characters, especially Darth Vader, are very hilarious and will surely make anyone laugh along. The emotions experienced by the characters are captured very vividly and thus make it easier to connect with the characters. Moreover, the illustrations in this comic book are also very finely detailed and colorful. They capture the characters and the setting in a comical way which complement the tones used very neatly.

I would highly recommend this absolutely creative and wonderful comic book to anyone. Hardcore fans of Star Wars would definitely appreciate everything about Darth Vader and Son, from the beloved characters to the underlying punchlines. This title is certainly a must-have for any fans out there.

On another note, parents can easily identify with the painfully hilarious situations that Darth Vader goes through as a father here. Readers, even for younger teens and children who are not familiar with the Star Wars, would also adore the illustrations in this title as Jeffrey Brown’s drawing style is very captivating.

Overall, Darth Vader and Son is a masterpiece that would easily capture the hearts of readers. Everything about this comic book is perfectly executed, from the illustrations to the conversations between the characters. It will surely put a smile on anyone’s face.

Stay tuned for the review on Darth Vader’s Little Princess, the sequel to Darth Vader and Son!
